Purpose of the CD-Rom

The Mining, Environment and Development CD-Rom is a compilation of recent documents and publications by the United Nations and other organisations on the subject of mineral resources, mining and sustainable development.

The CD-Rom, jointly developed by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and the United Nations Environment Programme Division of Technology, Industry and Economics (UNEP-DTIE), is intended to complement the online resources provided by the Mineral Resources Forum (MRF) by providing an alternate means of disseminating information, ideas and good practices to interested individuals and organisations. The CD-Rom is particularly targeted at users in areas, who do not have access to fast and/or reliable Internet connections that allow download of the documents, especially those of a large size.

Organisation of the CD-Rom Contents

The documents contained on the CD-Rom are categorised according to both, the Organisation producing them and also by the major Topic of the document such as environmental, small-scale mining or occupational health and safety issues.

The section "By Organisation", introduces each organisation through a short overview of their activities in the mining sector followed by a listing of their documents that are available.

Additional material is provided through an introductory overview of the evolution of Sustainable Development as it relates to the mining sector and a description of the International Law that impacts upon the activities of the sector.

The material provided was compiled during December 2002. Since that date, old documents may have been updated and new documents made available.
