 The
World Bank Group
The World Bank Group recognizes the potential of countries' mineral
sectors to significantly influence regional and national economic
and poverty profiles. Our vision is a mining sector that, by attracting
private investments, creates a foundation for economic and social
well-being and environmental responsibility.
To further this vision, the World Bank Group provides services
to government, the private sector and civil society. Government
is assisted through the design of policy and regulatory frameworks,
as well as the financing of interventions. The private sector is
assisted through support and financing for environmentally and socially
sustainable private sector investment in developing countries.
Support is provided to civil society through facilitation of dialogue
with mining companies and governments.
To improve the effectiveness and reach of its activities in the
mining sector, the World Bank Group has recently combined the operations
of the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development / International
Development Association (IBRD/IDA) and International Finance Corporation
(IFC) in the sector into a single global Mining Department. The
new department aims to bring work on public sector policy and the
private sector investment support closer together; to achieve synergies;
and to provide a simpler and more direct contact point for government,
private sector and civil society clients.
