The UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA), Division
for Sustainable Development, Natural Resources and SIDS Branch provides
policy advisory services to developing countries and economies in
transition in the formulation of strategies and legislation to achieve
self-reliance in the mineral sector, attract investments and ensure
the sustainability of minerals development activities and the protection
and preservation of ecosystems.
Emphasis is given to the development of policies that stress the
social dimensions of mining, including safe and sustainable livelihood
opportunities in small-scale mining ventures.

The Natural Resources Forum is a journal produced by the
United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN

The UN DESA and the UN ECA, recently
organised a seminar on "Artisanal and Small-scale Mining
in Africa: Identifying Best Practices and Building the Sustainable
Livelihoods of Communities" that was held in Yaoundé,
Cameroon, from 19-22 November 2002. The following recommendations
