United
Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)
Division of Technology, Industry and Economics (DTIE)
The initiatives on mining, minerals and environment
within UNEP DTIE are aimed at integrating environmental criteria
into mining and mineral development, thus ensuring that the sector
contributes to national development in the long term (sustainable
development). Activities are focussed on enhancing governmental
and corporate policies and practices concerning mining operations,
and to encourage leadership among key stakeholders concerning
scientific, regulatory and technical development of the industry.
This should take place in a broad development framework aimed
at achieving more sustainable production and consumption patters
at global and national levels.
Work has in recent times focussed on information
exchange covering best practice mining operation, tailings management,
accident prevention and preparedness, regulatory and management
practice, and the role of the financing sector in enhancing environmental
performance. Extensive training material has been produced to
support the above, as well as development of a programme of information
exchange on environmental issues generally.
Further information on the activities of UNEP-DTIE
is available from: [http://www.uneptie.org/pc/mining]
A brochure
(PDF) is available that presents the main mining and the environment

Mineral Resources Forum (MRF) - Environment
The MRF-Environment [http://www.mineralresourcesforum.org]
is an Internet framework for information on the theme of minerals,
metals and sustainable development, promoting the exchange
of knowledge, experience and expertise in the impact of mining,
mineral processing and metals on the natural environment;
the mitigation of environmental damage; and planning for mine
closure and disposal of hazardous wastes.
The MRF-Environment is a section of the Mineral
Resources Forum (MRF) website [http://www.natural-resources.org/minerals/].
Other sections of the MRF examine issues from the perspective
of topics such as Law and Policy, Development, and Small-Scale
Mining as well as various regional areas.
