United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD)

 

International Labour Organisation (ILO)

The ILO has been involved in mining sector activities in Africa and elsewhere. Their principal areas of concern are small scale mining, safety and health, training and industrial relations. Work is also conducted on the issue of child labour across a variety of sectors including mining.

A variety of other documents on mining are available.

United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA)

The UNECA Committee on Natural Resources and Science and Technology (CNRST) serves as a forum for the promotion of cooperation among African countries in the areas of science and technology and development and natural resources and for providing advice on science and technology issues relevant to the development of member States. The Committee meets on a biennial basis.

The UN ECA, along with the UN DESA, organised a seminar on "Artisanal and Small-scale Mining in Africa: Identifying Best Practices and Building the Sustainable Livelihoods of Communities" that was held in Yaoundé, Cameroon, from 19-22 November 2002. The World Bank Group

The Pollution Prevention and Abatement Handbook (PPAH) was adopted in July 1998 and applies to all Bank funded projacts after this time. The guidelines are designed to be used in the context of the World Bank Group’s environmental policies set out in Operational Policy (OP) 4.01, “Environmental Assessment,” and related documents. The environmental assessment process sets the requirements for environmental performance of projects.

The handbook includes a range of sectoral guidelines, those of relevance to the mineral resources are (PDF format):

 

UN Panel of Experts on the Illegal Exploitation of Natural Resources and Other Forms of Wealth of the Democratic Republic of the Congo

In June 2000, the President of the UN Security Council requested the UN Secretary-General to establish a Panel of Experts on the illegal exploitation of the natural resources and other forms of wealth of the Democratic Republic of the Congo with the following mandate (S/PRST/2000/20):

(a) To follow up on reports and collect information on all activities of illegal exploitation of natural resources and other forms of wealth of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, including in violation of the sovereignty of that country;

(b) To research and analyse the links between the exploitation of the natural resources and other forms of wealth in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the continuation of the conflict.

Other Organizations Documents

 

Partnership Africa Canada
A coalition of Canadian and African organizations that work in partnership to promote sustainable human development policies that benefit African and Canadian societies.

MMSD Southern Africa
Research reports are available for download on the topics of: Small Scale Mining, HIV/AIDS, Mining and Society, Biophysical, Managing Mineral Wealth, Biophysical, and a Baseline Survey.

In addition the Proceedings of a Multi-Stakeholder Workshop to discuss the findings are presented.

Mandala Projects
The Mandala Projects is a collection of cross-disciplinary efforts to examine the effects of globalization on people. The Trade and Environment Database (TED) and Inventory of Conflict and Environment (ICE) are two projects under this banner. Each consists of a series of case studies, reserach papers and other information on the areas of trade, conflict, environment, culture, etc. The following documents are taken from these databases and relate specifically to the mineral industry and Africa.

Royal Institute of International Affairs
An independent research and membership organisation working to promote understanding of international issues. Recent papers can be found here. Examples of some past papers include:
