and the
Role of Mineral Wealth in Socio-economic Development

A joint seminar by the:
United Nations Economic Commission for Africa
(ECA)
United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs
(UNDESA)
United Nations Conference on Trade and Development
(UNCTAD)

13-15 August 2002

Mulungushi International Conference Centre
Lusaka, Zambia

The seminar, jointly organised by UNCTAD and the ECA, helped finalise a set of learning materials concerning the impact of mineral wealth on development policy and allowed the exchange of experiences on this subject among participants.

Attendees included senior-level participants drawn from the ministries of finance, planning and mines of thirteen African countries; representatives of UNCTAD, ECA and the Southern African Development Community (SADC); and an observer from the Ministry of Natural Resources Canada. Five international consultants were engaged as authors/presenters of the learning materials which were reviewed during the seminar, this was augmented by country case studies/overviews presented by country representatives.

Funding for the seminar was kindly provided by the Department for International Development (DfID) of the United Kingdom. The seminar was conducted in both English and French.
