The purpose of the workshop is to review the rationale for an Africa Mining Network and to discuss modalities for the Network's establishment and operation. The workshop and the Africa Mining Network are intended to support ongoing and emerging initiatives in Africa including the Africa Mining Partnership, a recent initiative of African mining ministers linked to the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD). Participants in the workshop will include selected experts from government, the mining industry, academia and NGOs, from within and outside of Africa. Participation is by invitation only and will be limited to around 40 persons in order to promote meaningful interaction and discussion. The results of the workshop will be used by UNCTAD and UN ECA to specify
