The
World Bank
Africa
Business Network - is focused on the needs of investors in Africa.
For small businesses, it provides general business help and "how-to"
information in formulating a business plan, starting a business,
financing and managing it. It also includes a variety of information
for larger businesses. The publications include: an address
by Tie Mante, IFC, to the Sub-Saharan Oil and Minerals Conference
in 1993.

The SADC has been established under a Treaty with

Communities
and Small-Scale Mining (CASM)
CASM is an umbrella forum, providing a coordinated approach to assessing
and addressing some of the problems within the small-scale mining
sub-sector and disseminating pertinent information on activities.
The CASM Secretariat is located at the World Bank Group, Mining
Department.
Minerals
and Energy Policy Centre (MEPC)
MEPC is an autonomous knowledge-based organization that promotes
the sustainable development of the Minerals and Energy sectors of
Africa. They work on a range of policy research, policy audits,
impact studies, and policy facilitation among stakeholders with
national, regional and international public and private clients
on a non-profit basis.
MMSD
Southern Africa
The regional working group for Southern Africa of the Mining, Minerals
and Sustainable Development (MMSD) project that has the goal of
establishing how mining and minerals can best contribute to the
global transition to sustainable development. A variety of documents
are available on the MMSD Southern Africa process, papers, newsletters,
commissioned research papers and a multi-stakeholder workshop proceedings.
University of the Witwatersrand and CSIR (Council
for Scientific and Industrial Research) are jointly managing the
Southern African process of MMSD.
Southern
African Network for Training and Research on the Environment
(SANTREN)
SANTREN is a network of research and educational institutions and
experts in the SADC region. The network is organized in more than
a dozen technical groups with the main objective being to bring
together individuals, universities, industrial organization and
other institutions in the Southern African region in a financially
sustainable programme of environmental research, training and capacity
building. Meetings and workshops facilitate an intensive exchange
of information and the promotion of research.
SANTREN was formed in 1995 as a collaborative training project of
the Carl Duisberg Gesellschaft e.V (CDG) of Germany, the Institute
of Environmental Studies (IES) of the University of Zimbabwe and
various universities within the SADC region. The secretariat is
situated in Harare at the IES.
Technical
teams have been established in the areas of Mining
and the Environment, Small-Scale
Mining and Mine
Dumps among others. A number of training courses have
been developed including: Environmental
Management of Mine Dumps/Dams, Mining
and the Environment and Environmental
Hazards in Mining.
Intermediate
Technology Development Group (ITDG)
ITDG is an international non-governmental organization which specialises
in helping people to use technology for 'Practical Answers to Poverty'.
Based in the United Kingdom, the group works in the regions of Latin
America, East Africa, Southern Africa and South Asia focusing on
small-scale mining, in addition to agriculture, transport, shelter,
disaster mitigation and energy technologies.
Wassa Association of Communities Affected
By Mining (WACAM)
WACAM is a Ghanaian grassroots organisation that campaigns on behalf
of communities which have been adversely affected by the gold mining
activities in the region. They tackle the problems created when
communities are moved off their land by mining companies, as well
as the problems of those forced to live in close proximity of a
mine. These issues range from loss of land and livelihood, pollution
of water sources, increased poverty and lack of access to schooling
and health care.

Environmental
Rights Action (ERA)
ERA is an environmental watch group located in Port Harcourt, Nigeria.
ERA publishes a monthly Niger Delta ALERT magazine, and testimonies
of residents of the region. ERA also has reports on multinational
oil corporations operating in Nigeria's Niger Delta.

The
Southern and Eastern African Mineral Centre
(SEAMIC)
SEAMIC is an independent regional centre of knowledge and information
for southern and eastern Africa established in 1977, under the umbrella

Member States are Ethiopia, Mozambique and Tanzania, later on joined
by Angola, the Comoros and Uganda. Membership is open to all other

PANGIS
