United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA)
ECA's primary responsibility is to carry out activities encouraging the growth of the economic and social sectors in the African region. ECA has five Sub-Regional Development Centres:North Africa, East Africa, West Africa, Central Africa and Southern Africa.

UNECA - Committee on Natural Resources and Science and Technology (CNRST)
CNRST serves as a forum for the promotion of cooperation among African countries in the areas of science and technology and development and natural resources and for providing advice on science and technology issues relevant to the development of member States. The Committee meets on a biennial basis.

UNECA - Regional Cooperation and Integration Division - Promoting Regional Cooperation in Minerals and Energy Resources Development

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)
Division of Earth Sciences - UNESCO sponsors a range of courses to aid capacity building in the earth sciences field. They are also active in information management through programs such as the Deposit Modeling Programme (DMP), Geological Applications of Remote Sensing (GARS), the Pan-African Network for a Geological Information System (PANGIS), and the Southeast Asian Network for a Geological Information System (SANGIS).

The World Bank
Africa Business Network - is focused on the needs of investors in Africa. For small businesses, it provides general business help and "how-to" information in formulating a business plan, starting a business, financing and managing it. It also includes a variety of information for larger businesses. The publications include: an address by Tie Mante, IFC, to the Sub-Saharan Oil and Minerals Conference in 1993.

Focus on the New Africa: Fact Sheet on Foreign Direct Investment
A joint initiative by UNCTAD, MIGA, UNDP, and the ICC to promote foreign direct investment (FDI) into the African region.

Southern African Development Community (SADC) - Mining Sector Coordination

The SADC has been established under a Treaty with the broad objectives of achieving economic growth and development, alleviation of poverty, enhancing the standard and quality of life of the peoples of Southern Africa and support of the socially disadvantaged through regional integration, and achieving sustainable utilization of mineral resources and effective protection of the environment.

The Mining Sector has identified the following areas for regional integration; information exchange, enhancement of technological capacity, establishment of common standards, promotion of private sector participation, development of small scale mining, environmental protection and occupational health and safety.

Communities and Small-Scale Mining (CASM)
CASM is an umbrella forum, providing a coordinated approach to assessing and addressing some of the problems within the small-scale mining sub-sector and disseminating pertinent information on activities. The CASM Secretariat is located at the World Bank Group, Mining Department. 

Minerals and Energy Policy Centre (MEPC)
MEPC is an autonomous knowledge-based organization that promotes the sustainable development of the Minerals and Energy sectors of Africa. They work on a range of policy research, policy audits, impact studies, and policy facilitation among stakeholders with national, regional and international public and private clients on a non-profit basis.

MMSD Southern Africa
The regional working group for Southern Africa of the Mining, Minerals and Sustainable Development (MMSD) project that has the goal of establishing how mining and minerals can best contribute to the global transition to sustainable development. A variety of documents are available on the MMSD Southern Africa process, papers, newsletters, commissioned research papers and a multi-stakeholder workshop proceedings.

University of the Witwatersrand and CSIR (Council for Scientific and Industrial Research) are jointly managing the Southern African process of MMSD.

Southern African Network for Training and Research on the Environment (SANTREN)
SANTREN is a network of research and educational institutions and experts in the SADC region. The network is organized in more than a dozen technical groups with the main objective being to bring together individuals, universities, industrial organization and other institutions in the Southern African region in a financially sustainable programme of environmental research, training and capacity building. Meetings and workshops facilitate an intensive exchange of information and the promotion of research.

SANTREN was formed in 1995 as a collaborative training project of the Carl Duisberg Gesellschaft e.V (CDG) of Germany, the Institute of Environmental Studies (IES) of the University of Zimbabwe and various universities within the SADC region. The secretariat is situated in Harare at the IES.

Technical teams have been established in the areas of Mining and the Environment, Small-Scale Mining and Mine Dumps among others. A number of training courses have been developed including: Environmental Management of Mine Dumps/Dams, Mining and the Environment and Environmental Hazards in Mining.

Intermediate Technology Development Group (ITDG)
ITDG is an international non-governmental organization which specialises in helping people to use technology for 'Practical Answers to Poverty'. Based in the United Kingdom, the group works in the regions of Latin America, East Africa, Southern Africa and South Asia focusing on small-scale mining, in addition to agriculture, transport, shelter, disaster mitigation and energy technologies.

Wassa Association of Communities Affected By Mining (WACAM)
WACAM is a Ghanaian grassroots organisation that campaigns on behalf of communities which have been adversely affected by the gold mining activities in the region. They tackle the problems created when communities are moved off their land by mining companies, as well as the problems of those forced to live in close proximity of a mine. These issues range from loss of land and livelihood, pollution of water sources, increased poverty and lack of access to schooling and health care.

Environmental Rights Action (ERA)
ERA is an environmental watch group located in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. ERA publishes a monthly Niger Delta ALERT magazine, and testimonies of residents of the region. ERA also has reports on multinational oil corporations operating in Nigeria's Niger Delta.

Chamber of Mines of South Africa
Comprehensive news, data and policy information on mining, with emphasis on the activity of the South African mining industry.

The Chamber provides a page listing the daily mining news from South African newspapers.

Tanzania Chamber of Mines (TCM)
Represents private participants in the Tanzanian mineral sector.

World Diamond Council (WDC)
Adapted from the World Diamond Council website. "The WDC includes representation from the diamond industry, countries where diamonds play a major economic role and the international banking sector. The Council's mandate is the development, implementation and oversight of a tracking system for the export and import of rough diamonds to prevent the exploitation of diamonds for illicit purposes such as war and inhumane acts. Human rights activists refer to diamonds exploited in this way as "blood" or "conflict" diamonds. A System for International Rough Diamond Export and Import Controls has been developed."

Business Partners for Development (BPD) - Natural Resources Cluster
Extract from website: "The Natural Resources Cluster seeks to enhance the role of oil, gas and mining corporations in development. Our aim is to produce practical examples, based on 'focus projects' around the world, of how three-way partnerships involving companies, government authorities and civil society organization can be a more effective means of reducing social risks and promoting community development."

National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) - South Africa
NUM is the largest recognized union representing workers in the Mining, Energy and Construction industries in South Africa. They provide services in legal, collective bargaining, health and safety, job grading, education and training, social security and housing. Affiliate, internationally, of the ICEM.

AngloGold is the world’s largest gold producer, based in South Africa, with operations worldwide.

The company has operations in Ghana, Guinea, Tanzania and Zimbabwe

De Beers
The following text is adapted from the De Beers website. De Beers produces about 45% by value of the total annual global diamond production from mines in South Africa, Botswana and Namibia. The gem mining operations span - open pit, underground, alluvial, coastal and under sea - while its exploration programme extends across six continents.

Resolute Mining Ltd
Gold producer and explorer based in Australia. The company has two operating gold mines of which the Golden Pride Gold Project is located in Tanzania. FRAME - A program to build knowledge-sharing networks for natural resource professionals in Africa. One of the collective learning forums is Mining and Environmental Health in Africa (MEHA).

Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) - Mining, Metals and Minerals section
An industrial research organization in Africa committed to innovation, supporting sustainable development and economic growth. CSIR is joint manager, with the University of Witwatersrand, of the MMSD Southern Africa process.

The Southern and Eastern African Mineral Centre (SEAMIC)
SEAMIC is an independent regional centre of knowledge and information for southern and eastern Africa established in 1977, under the umbrella of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA). Founder Member States are Ethiopia, Mozambique and Tanzania, later on joined by Angola, the Comoros and Uganda. Membership is open to all other countries of the eastern and southern African sub-region.

The Mission of SEAMIC is to "Promote socio-economic and environmentally responsible mineral sector development in Eastern and Southern Africa, through establishing an independent reliable mineral centre of knowledge, research and development, services and products, training and a hub for geo-information for the sub region."

SEAMIC host the Geoscience Data-compilation in Eastern and Southern Africa (Geodesa) project. The project’s main objective is to make the region’s mineral exploration information more easily accessible by providing assistance to the 13 individual member States.

The Pan-African Network for a Geological Information System (PANGIS)
PANGIS aims to enhance the capacity of national geological surveys in order to respond more effectively and efficiently to the decision-makers' need for data on the country's natural resources. This is to be achieved through standardization of geological data bases in the region to facilitate the exchange, transfer and retrieval of data among African countries and between African and non-African countries and produce data in a format which can be easily interpreted and integrated into other management information.

Centre International pour la Formation et les Echanges Géologiques (CIFEG)/ International Centre for Training and Exchange in Geoscience
CIFEG, a French organisation, provides assistance to developing countries in the earth sciences field through: the management of information (PANGIS and SANGIS programmes); information on the existing surveys and litterature referring to the geology of their country (CIFEG Database); and the publication of the results of their scientific research.

The Royal Museum of Central Africa / Musée royal de l'Afrique centrale
The Museum is one of the major centres for the scientific study of Africa in the world, focusing on a range of academic disciplines including Historical Sciences, Cultural Anthropology, Zoology and Geology. The website includes the Metafro InfoSys an information system integrating the catalogue of belgian data sources related to the Central African states, and Burundi and Rwanda.
