Following the Global Mining Initiative Conference in May and the World Summit on Sustainable Development in September, this inaugural Minerals Council of Australia Sustainable Development Conference will focus on how Australian minerals operations can contribute to sustainable development in a practical way. Further information including program details can be obtained from the Program and Registration brochure (Adobe PDF 694KB). Title of event:
Design of Covers for Saline, Sodic and Sulfidic Wastes Encapsulation of large volume waste material produced in mining operations,
or as a result of mineral processing, is often undertaken to minimise
potential environmental impacts. Constructed covers can be designed to
minimise these impacts, but their design requires a knowledge of the fluxes
of oxygen, water and salts through materials of different texture and
compaction, as well the influence of biotic factors and erosion on cover
performance. This course provides a practical coverage of all of the issues
that need to be addressed in cover design in an integrated manner. The workshop is to be held in Newcastle, NSW just prior to the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) Sustainable Development Conference. Registration is due by 25 October. Further information can be obtained from the workshop brochure. Title of event: Acid Mine Drainage Generation,
Management and Treatment This course is an introductory/refresher course on acid mine drainage
(AMD) for environmental scientists, engineers, mine planners and geologists
in both the mining industry and government departments. It will provide
a fundamental introduction to many of the issues associated with AMD and
equip attendees with the understanding and skills to implement practices
to minimise the occurrence of AMD on mine sites. This course will complement
that on Covers Design on 10 Further information can be obtained from the workshop
brochure. Title of event: Practical Monitoring for
Improved Environmental Management in Mining Event details: Further information is available from the workshop brochure (Adobe PDF 161KB). Title of event: Extractive Industries Review
- Regional Consultation Workshop IV – Asia and the Pacific Region The Extractive Industries Review (EIR) is a process that the World Bank Group has launched to discuss its future role in the extractive industries with concerned stakeholders. The aim is to produce a set of recommendations that will guide involvement of the World Bank Group in the sectors of oil, gas and mining. The fourth World Bank Extractive Industries Review (EIR) workshop is to be held in Indonesia. Title of event: Achieving Sustainable Mine
