United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN ESCAP).
ESCAP, located in Bangkok Thailand, has the goal of promoting economic and social development throughout the Asian and Pacific region.

The Environment and Sustainable Development Division focuses on water and energy resources, and the environment.

United Nations Economic and Social Commission for West Asia (UN ESCWA)
ESCWA, headquatered in Beirut, Lebanon, promotes economic and social development through regional and subregional cooperation and integration and serves as the main general economic and social development forum within the United Nations system. It formulates and promotes development assistance activities and projects commensurate with the needs and priorities of the region and acts as an executing agency for relevant operational projects.

The ESCWA region member countries include: Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the Syrian Arab Republic, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen.

The Sustainable Development and Productivity Division promotes integrated sustainable management of water and energy and the production sectors.

South East Asian Network for a Geological Information System (SANGIS) - A project to develop the information potential of South-East Asian Geological Surveys. SANGIS aims at up-grading and harmonising existing digital data management systems in order to stimulate information circulation, to facilitate access to information and to promote the creation of an efficient regional geoscientific network.

Ministerial Council on Mineral and Petroleum Resources (Formerly the Australia and New Zealand Minerals and Energy Council- ANZMEC)
The Council consists of the Commonwealth Minister for Industry, Tourism and Resources, State and Territory Ministers with responsibility for minerals and energy and the New Zealand Minister for Energy. The Papuan New Guinean Minister for Mining and the Minister for Petroleum and Energy have observer status. The council meets annually. The councils mission is to promote the general welfare and progressive development of the Australian mining and minerals industry; and consult on the nation's energy needs, resources and policies. Publications include a "Strategic Framework for Mine Closure", Strategic Framework for Tailings Management, and Principles for Engagement with Communities and Stakeholders (Draft) .

Group of Experts on Minerals and Energy Exploration and Development (GEMEED)
The Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum has created the Group of Experts on Minerals and Energy Exploration and Development (GEMEED).

At the 6th GEMEED Plenary Meeting a proposal for a action plan the “Sustainable Development Initiative in Mining for the Asia-Pacific Region” to develop a proactive approach to issues being identified at the international level.

The GEMEED Environmental Cooperation sub-group organises Environmental Cooperation Workshops (ECOW) on mineral and environmental/sustainable development themes. These are supported by the:

  • ECOW Virtual Centre
    The aim of the site is to assist prevent potential environmental problems arising from the exploration and development of mineral resources, as well as mitigate existing mine pollution problems at mines and refineries in the APEC region. This is acheived through the provision of institutional and technological information. Managed by MMAJ. (Japanese/English)

APEC Network on Minerals and Energy Data (ANMED)
Information database on the mining end energy resource sectors in APEC member countries. Information includes resources, industries, finance and investment, legal and regulatory, land and environment, and geoscientific data. The project is led by the Australian Geological Survey Organisation (AGSO).

Representatives of the Australian minerals industry and Environment Australia (the environment arm of the Commonwealth Government), are working together to collect and present information on a variety of topics that illustrate and explain best practice environmental management in Australia's minerals industry. Environment Protection Agency (EPA) - Queensland

Japan

Metal Mining Agency of Japan (MMAJ)
The Metal Mining Agency of Japan (MMAJ) is a semigovernmental organization under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of International Trade and Industry and the main organization that executes the Japanese Government's policies related to the mining industry.

The Mineral Resources Information Center (MRIC), a department of the MMAJ, collects, analyzes and distributes information on the non-ferrous sector. Information available includes: an overview of the Japan mining industry; a compilation of mining laws of Asian countries; maps and summaries of investigative exploration surveys/projects conducted in over 140 countries worldwide; and an interactive regional and detailed geological/mineral map of the Asia Pacific region. National Institute for Resources and Environment (NIRE)
The National Institute for Resources and Environment (NIRE) is concerned with a wide range of research fields such as environmental protection, the development of natural resources and new forms of energy, and industrial safety. (Japanese/English)

Institute for Geo-Resources and Environment
The Institute for Geo-Resources and Environment is a research institute of the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), one of the largest public research organizations in Japan. The Institute for GeoResources and Environment mission is to contribute to society and industry through fieldwork and research on the planning and evaluation of exploration and the development and utilization of underground resources such as geothermal and fuel resources and inorganic resources, to assist the continuued supply of basic energy and mineral resources. A recent project in the mineral resources area is the 'Interdisciplinary Study on the Environmental Management, Planning and Risk Communication in Gold Rush Regions'. Mirrar People - Kakadu
MIRRAR is the name of an Aboriginal clan located in the Kakadu region, Northern Territory, Australia. Uranium mining has occurred on Mirrar land for the last 20 years. The Mirrar oppose the development of the proposed Jabiluka mine in Kakadu, Northern Territory, Australia.

North Queensland Conservation Council (NQCC)


Oxfam Community Aid Abroad (CAA).
CAA have an active mining campaign. A significant component of this program has been the establishment of an independent Mining Ombudsman to hear complaints by individuals and communities about negative impacts of the activities of the Australian mineral companies within developing countries of the Asia Pacific and Latin America regions. The Mining Ombudsman Annual Report 2000-2001 is available.

Tebtebba Foundation
Tebtebba, the Indigenous Peoples' International Centre for Policy Research and Education, was established in 1996. Tebtebba, "discourse" from the Philippine indigenous Kankanaey dialect, is firmly committed to the recognition, protection and promotion of indigenous peoples' rights worldwide. Tebtebba's main thrust is to help build the capacity of indigenous peoples to assert their rights and articulate their own analyses and perspectives on issues directly affecting them.

World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) - Australia
WWF Australia have a Resource Conservation Program with a specific focus on the mining industry. They conduct an annual assessment of the quality of mining company sustainability reporting, published as 'Ore or Overburden'.

In partnership with the mining company, Placer Dome, WWF are actively assessing whether independent certification for environmental and social performance can be developed for the mining industry. This is based on experiences of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification scheme.

WWF conduct projects with a range of corporate partners, including Rio Tinto and Alcoa Alumina Worldwide Australia. These partnerships are undertaken based on the Principles for WWF Cooperation with Industry.
