E-mail Address of Event Organizer: peter.borkey@oecd.org

Event Details:

How to make environmental and investment goals mutually supportive will be the theme of an OECD conference on Foreign Direct Investment and the Environment. Discussions will focus on the mining sector, but participants will also discuss broader lessons relating to FDI and the environment linkages and the role of globalisation in supporting sustainable development.

Organised within the framework of OECD's Global Forum on International Investment (GFII), the conference aims to shed further light on the linkages between FDI and the environment in a sector that is of particular importance for many developing countries and which has frequently given rise to environmental concerns. Its results will contribute to preparations for the World Summit on Sustainable Development, to be held in Johannesburg, South Africa, in August 2002. The entire proceedings will be open to the media.

Participants will include senior officials from OECD and non-OECD countries in charge of investment and environment policy and development issues, as well as representatives of multilateral organisations, business, labour and civil society.

The conference will be structured around three main issues:

  • Environmental performance of foreign investors in the mining sector;
  • Policy/institutional frameworks that integrate environmental and investment goals; and
  • Ways of encouraging "best environmental practice" through OECD's recently revised Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises and other voluntary commitments by the private sector.

The OECD Global Forum on International Investment is one of eight "Global Forums" launched by the OECD's Centre for Co-operation with Non-Members to deepen and extend relations with non-OECD countries in fields where the OECD has particular expertise and where global dialogue is important. The Global Forum on International Investment will foster open and inclusive dialogue on emerging investment issues among stakeholders and investment policy makers around the world.
