and Energy Recovery International Symposium An international symposium on the integration of metallurgical processes, energy recovery and waste treatment for the processing of complex raw materials and waste is organised in the heart of the Skellefte Ore District, Sweden. The Symposium, organized

Global Forum to Focus on Foreign Direct Investment and Environment - Lessons
from the Mining Sector How to make environmental and investment goals mutually supportive will be the theme of an OECD conference on Foreign Direct Investment and the Environment. Discussions will focus on the mining sector, but participants will also discuss broader lessons relating to FDI and the environment linkages and the role of globalisation in supporting sustainable development. Organised within the framework of OECD's Global Forum on International Investment (GFII), the conference aims to shed further light on the linkages between FDI and the environment in a sector that is of particular importance for many developing countries and which has frequently given rise to environmental concerns. Its results will contribute to preparations for the World Summit on Sustainable Development, to be held in Johannesburg, South Africa, in August 2002. The entire proceedings will be open to the media. The conference will be structured around three main issues:

Mining Industry: Old Threats and New Challenges The CEPMLP conducts an annual mining seminar that provides a forum, in which international experts and executives can exchange ideas and debate issues which have a critical bearing on the future of the mining industry, in a relaxed and informal atmosphere. Title of event: Land Remediation The focus of the seminar will be the remediation of land contaminated with coal spoil, coal tar, PAHs, tar and bitumen, cyanides and phenolics. Topics presented during the seminar will cover the process of land remediation from initial site appraisal, liability, analysis, performance testing and planning to remediation and site afteruse. The legislative background will be explored especially with regard to EPA Part II and the protection of the environment including protection of water courses and groundwater. Novel remediation techniques will be presented and case study material will be used to demonstrate opportunities and constraints to site afteruse. Financing, Mining and Sustainability Workshop The third in a series of Financing, Mining and Sustainability workshops (co-hosted by UNEP, the World Bank Group and MMSD) was held in Paris, France, on the 14-15 January 2002 and explored the role of financial institutions in funding mining/minerals projects.
