How to make environmental and investment goals mutually supportive will be the theme of an OECD conference on Foreign Direct Investment and the Environment. Organised within the framework of OECD's Global Forum on International Investment (GFII), the conference aims to shed further light on the linkages between FDI and the environment in a sector that is of particular importance for many developing countries and which has frequently given rise to environmental concerns. Its results will contribute to preparations for the World Summit on Sustainable Development, to be held in Johannesburg, South Africa, in August 2002. The entire proceedings will be open to the media.

The conference will be structured around three main issues:

  • Environmental performance of foreign investors in the mining sector;
  • Policy/institutional frameworks that integrate environmental and investment goals; and
  • Ways of encouraging "best environmental practice" through OECD's recently revised Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises and other voluntary commitments by the private sector.
