European Union

EuroGeoSurveys
A European non-profit association constituted by the national Geological Survey organisations of the European Union plus Iceland, Norway and Switzerland. The association's main aim is to provide European institutions with expert, balanced and practical advice and information to assist problem-solving and policy formulation in areas such as the use of natural resources (minerals, water, energy soils and land) and the sustainable management of environmental issues and natural hazards. The focus of the site is GEIXS, the European Geological Data Resource, a comprehensive GIS database. (All EU languages)

Passive In-situ Remediation of Acidic Mine / Industrial Drainage (PIRAMID)
A Research Project of the European Commission Fifth Framework Programme completed in the Summer of 2003. The website provides comprehensive engineering guidelines for the passive remediation of acidic and / or metalliferous mine drainage and similar wastewater.

CEE Bankwatch Network
The CEE Bankwatch Network is an international NGO that moniors the activities of International Financial Institutions and proposes alternatives to their proposals and projects. The organization works in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) region.

Rosia Montana
A website managed by organisations opposed to the Gabriel Resources Ltd.'s proposed Rosia Montana mine in Romania. If the project proceeds it will be Europe's largest open-pit gold mine.

Eurometaux is a Brussels-based association which represents the European non-ferrous metals industry. Various news items, reports and position papers are available.

Business Partners for Development (BPD) - Natural Resources Cluster
Extract from website: "The Natural Resources Cluster seeks to enhance the role of oil, gas and mining corporations in development. Our aim is to produce practical examples, based on 'focus projects' around the world, of how three-way partnerships involving companies, government authorities and civil society organization can be a more effective means of reducing social risks and promoting community development."

Member partners include; AngloAmerican, BP plc., Shell International, CARE International, Placer Dome Ltd, WMC Ltd, UK Department for International Development (DFID) and The World Bank.

Focus projects in Latin America are: Las Cristinas gold mine - Venezuela; and BPXC, petroleum - Colombia, as well there are range of other focus projects in Africa and Indonesia accessible on the website.

In Europe the group operate Zinkgruvan a zinc, lead and silver mine in Sweden, Talc de Luzenac a talc mine in France, and the Neves Corvo tin and copper mine in Portugal as well as various refineries and smelting operations in the United Kingdom, Sardinia and Spain.

RAG AG (formerly Ruhrkohle AG) (German)

Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy (CEPMLP)
The centre offers a wide range of courses on law and policy in the areas of energy, petroleum, mining and natural resources, international and comparative water law and policy, and international business transactions.

Consulting advisory services are also offered, in the fields of petroleum and mining law, economics, energy law reform, international water law and national water regulation, post-privatisation electricity and pipeline regulation and contract negotiations.

A discussion forum ENATRES on energy and natural resources law is available.

Centre Terre et Pierre (CTP) / Centre Technologique International de la Terre et de la Pierre
CTP is a Belgian centre of technological development for the optimal treatment, recovery and concentration of solids such as:
- ores including base and precious metals, and industrial minerals;
- secondary materials such as glass, plastics, scraps, and sludge;
- and in other areas such as the chemical industry, and environmental impact.

The Centre is supported by the European Community and the Walloon Region of Belgium. (French/some English)

Ecole des Mines de Paris - Centre d'Economie Industrielle (CERNA)
CERNA is the Centre for Industrial Economics at the Paris School of Mines. Industrial Economics deal with the dynamics of markets and firms, and with the public intervention on those dynamics.

Cerna's research is empirical and focused on economic changes. It is initiated by case studies, on site investigation in firms and administrations.

Recent work has focused on voluntary industry approaches to improving environmental performance such as codes of conduct. They have recently been participants in an EC sponsored European Research Network for Voluntary Approaches to Environmental Performance (CAVA: Concerted Action on Voluntary Approaches). Literature surveys produced by this group in addition to workshop proceedings are available for download, as well as extensive reference lists on the topic of voluntary approaches. (French/English)

Eden Project - Global Centre for Post-Mining Regeneration
An partnership of the Eden Project, Rio Tinto, English Nature and Anglo American is investigating the need for a Global Centre for Post-Mining Regeneration through a year long feasibility study to finish in March 2004. The intention is to bring industry stakeholders together to address the major socio-economic, environmental and technical issues of mine closure planning.

Mining and Energy Research Network (MERN)
MERN is an international collaborative research network, involving 140 centres of excellence world-wide. Through research, training, teaching and consultancy, MERN generates analysis across the social, economic and environmental dimensions of sustainable development.
