Changing Face of Mining - Mineral Economics and Management Society
(MEMS) 2004 Annual Conference Mining is in a period of transition as it confronts an array of interrelated technical, environmental, and social issues. Financial implications have multiplied as investors, indigenous people, communities, non-governmental organizations and other interests apply increasing scrutiny to mining operations. With the immediacy of worldwide communications, local incidents become global news overnight. The MEMS 2004 Conference will explore elements of this change through presentations, panel discussions, special speakers, and a plenary debate. Topics will include:
Title of event: 6th
International Conference on Clean Technologies for the Mining Industry The conference aims to review advances in energy efficiency, less contaminating and safer processes for mineral processing and extractive metallurgy, as well as the social effect of mining activities. Development Indicators in the Mineral Industries (SDIMI 2003) Growing environmental and social concerns, supply chain procurement standards as well as public pressure and regulatory measures will profoundly shape the global mining business in the near future. In order to cope with these challenges the mining and minerals companies are forced to integrate sustainable development as well as stakeholders participation into their business strategies and policies. Up to now there are on-going discussions and projects on the development of sustainability indicators however these different efforts havent resulted into a common agreement yet. The objective of this Conference is to assist the mining and minerals industries in their global transition to sustainable development through the development, monitoring and assessment of sustainable development criteria for mineral operations. A goal of the Conference is also to conclude with a consensus plan and a process, representing a variety of stakeholders, which can provide audience to the minerals community on the path to sustainable development. The deadline for abstracts is 1 September 2002. Further information can be obtained here. Title of event: MCA 2002 Sustainable Development
Conference / 27th Annual Environmental Workshop - "Putting Principles
into Practice" 2002 will see a milestone in the minerals industry’s efforts to determine its role in sustainable development and plan actions that will build on the industry’s contribution to sustainability. Following the Global Mining Initiative Conference in May and the World Summit on Sustainable Development in September, this inaugural Minerals Council of Australia Sustainable Development Conference will focus on how Australian minerals operations can contribute to sustainable development in a practical way. The Conference will incorporate the 27th Annual Environmental Workshop which is highly regarded by environmental practitioners in government, business and the community. Consequently a strong technical environmental stream will feature in the Conference program. Original papers addressing the broad range of sustainable development issues relevant to the Australian minerals industry are invited from all stakeholders by 8 March 2002. The Organising Committee emphasises that the conference will be targeted at a broad range of participants and encourages anyone with an interest in the industry’s contribution to sustainable development to submit an abstract. Further information and submission details can be obtained from the Call for Papers brochure (Adobe PDF). Title of event:
