Information Resources

The following websites provide major sources of information on mineral resources and the mining industry.

Libraries

Mineral Resource Specific Libraries

  • Mining Environment Database
The Mining Environment Database is developed and maintained by the J.N. Desmarais Library, Laurentian University, Sudbury, Canada in cooperation with the Ontario Ministry of Northern Development and Mines. It was designed to provide mining companies in the province with access to current research literature on the environmental impact of mining, to assist in the preparation of mine closure and rehabilitation plans.

The Database includes over 22,000 citations to journal articles, conference papers, chapters in edited monographs, and government and private sector environmental reports, on the topics of mine closure, abandoned mines, land reclamation, acid mine drainage and other related topics. Access is free via a Web catalogue or Telnet.

  • MERLIN - Mining Environment Research Literature Information Network
MERLIN is a proposed international consortium, being coordinated by the Laurentian University, Ontario, Canada, in an effort to improve access around the globe to published research literature on mining and the environment. The network would consist of members from around the world, located in centres with a high concentration of mining activity. Each member would represent a library or information centre associated with a research institute or university, where either significant research is being undertaken on mining and the environment, or where graduate and undergraduate programmes on mining engineering, especially those with a strong environmental component, are offered.

Further information is available from the proposal (Adobe PDF)or by contacting:

AMLIS is a database used to store, manage and report on abandoned mine land problems that fall under the jurisdiction of the Office of Surface Mining. This includes both problems in need of reclamation and those that have been reclaimed.

Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) / Acid Rock Drainage
  • MEND 2000
MEND 2000 is a three-year program, commencing in January 1998 and funded by the Mining Association of Canada (MAC) and Natural Resources Canada, to provide state-of-the-art information and technology developmentson acid mine/rock drainage to users via workshops, reports and online services. An extensive listing of reports with abstracts, as well as a comprehensive manual of six volumes are available for purchase. (English/Francais)

Pollution Inventories
  • TRI - Toxic Release Inventory
The USA database inventory of information regarding toxic chemicals that are being used, manufactured, treated, transported, or released into the environment. The 2000 data indicated that the hard rock mining industry is responsible for the majority of pollution.

General Environmental Information
  • EnviroNET
Portal for accessing Australian environmental information managed by Environment Australia, Commonwealth Government of Australia. Categories of information include: business and commerce, funding opportunities, environmental solutions, reserach and development, education, government and legislation, contacting industry, community initiatives.

Maps/GIS

Geological and Mineral Maps / GIS

  • GEODESA - GEOscience Data compilation in Eastern and Southern Africa
A project funded by the EU to assist the 13 member country geological surveys make te regions geoscience and exploration information more easily accessible for promoting private sector investment.

A GIS based meta-database on a CD-ROM has been developed of regional geophysical and geochemical surveys conducted in Eastern and Southern Africa including an index of available geological maps. Sample information can be viewed. A copy of the CD-ROM (September 1999, 1st Edition) may be obtained for US$250 by contacting: geodesa@cats-net.com. Further information is available from the Southern and Eastern African Mineral Center (SEAMIC).
    • The application of new exploration techniques and geoscience databases within the new economic framework of African mineral exploration - G. Borg, SEAMIC, 2000.
  • Interactive Resource and Tenure Maps of Queensland - Queensland Government Department of Natural Resources and Mines, Australia
The interactive maps provide spatial information on geological and geophysical data, mineral and coal resources, petroleum exploration, tenure and major infrastucture of Queensland from the databases and systems of the Department of Natural Resources and Mines.
  • Intierra
Intierra provides information and knowledge management service to resource companies, investors and Government agencies operating in the global resources sector. Subscribers can access a comprehensive web-based GIS system comprising files, maps, images and other documents. The company focuses on Australia and Australian resource companies.
  • MMAJ - Metal Mining Agency of Japan
The MMAJ has developed an interactive online GIS Mineral Resources Map of Asia that features data on geology, mineralisation and deposit type and size, mining operations and resources and reserves. The area covered includes Asia, Central Asia, parts of the south-east Pacific, the Indian sub-continent, and sections of the Middle East.
  • The Pan-African Network for a Geological Information System (PANGIS) - PANGIS aims to enhance the capacity of national geological surveys in order to respond more effectively and efficiently to the decision-makers' need for data on the country's natural resources. This is to be achieved through standardization of geological data bases in the region to facilitate the exchange, transfer and retrieval of data among African countries and between African and non-African countries and produce data in a format which can be easily interpreted and integrated into other management information.
  • South East Asian Network for a Geological Information System (SANGIS) - A project to develop the information potential of South-East Asian Geological Surveys. SANGIS aims at up-grading and harmonising existing digital data management systems in order to stimulate information circulation, to facilitate access to information and to promote the creation of an efficient regional geoscientific network.
  • World Mineral Resources - Freely provided data source by ESRI Inc. of the distribution of mineral resources worldwide. The GIS database includes country boundaries, city location and major water surface features. See listing towards the bottom of the linked page to access the mineral resource GIS information and map.
