Mining, Minerals and Sustainable Development (MMSD) Project

The following page lists many of the major documents produced through Mining, Minerals Sustainable Development (MMSD) process. These are also available from the official MMSD websites, details of which are provided below.

MMSD Global

The MMSD Global website is hosted on the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) website.

The MMSD Final Report "Breaking New Ground: Mining, Minerals, and Sustainable Development" released in May 2002 is available for download from the MMSD website.

The report describes some of the major problems confronting the minerals sector including its impacts on poverty, human well-being, the environment, indigenous communities, efficiency and resource consumption, armed
conflict, protected areas and biodiversity, corruption, human rights,
and the management of mining waste. The findings of the project are used to present an Agenda for Change with the intent of improving the sector's environmental and social performance.

A hardcopy of the report has been published by Earthscan that includes a CD-ROM containing an ebook of the report that is automatically indexed and cross-referenced with full search facilities, along with copies of the MMSD Regional Reports, commissioned research, and consultation process documents. This may be ordered from Earthprint.

Regional Groups

Four regional groups have been established by the MMSD - Australia, Southern Africa, Latin America, and North America. These groups have commissioned and conducted research into issues of a more regional nature that contribute to the overall global process. For example, HIV/AIDS has been a major focus of the work of the Southern Africa regional group.

The major documents produced are listed below by Regional Group.

MMSD Australia

The MMSD Australia website is hosted by the Australian Minerals and Energy Environment Foundation (AMEEF).

The following documents have been produced as part of the work of the Mining, Minerals and Sustainable Development (MMSD) Australia regional group.

Papers and research reports presented at the Ameef/MMSD Australia regional group conference "Engaging Stakeholders Improving Industry Performance" held in Brisbane, 17 - 18 September (Adobe PDF format):
