El Observatorio Latinoamericano de Conflictos Ambientales

Chile based organization. Site in Spanish. El Observatorio asesora a comunidades en conflicto, para potenciar sus capacidades de gestión a favor de sus derechos ambientales. Grupo de Análisis para el Desarrollo
(GRADE) / Group of Analysis for Development
GRADE is a Peru based private research center devoted to the study of economic, environmental and social issues in an effort to contribute to the development of Peru and Latin America.

Mining and Communities in Peru and Canada
/ Minería y Comunidades en Perú y en Canadá
The project involves the Peruvian group CooperAcción and two Canadian organizations: the Canadian Environmental Law Association (CELA) and the Environmental Mining Council of British Columbia with support provided by the Environment and Sustainable Development Program of the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).

Activities have focused on the Peruvian Central Highlands, including the communities of Vicco and La Oroya, and has included community consultation and the conduct of workshops.


Transnational Mining in the Andes: Resources for Communities
/ Minería Transnacional en los Andes: Recursos para Comunidades
A collection of resources to assist communities respond to the impacts of transnational mining operations prepared through cooperation between the Environmental Mining Council of British Columbia (Canada), Cooperación (Peru), Cepromin (Bolivia), and El Observatorio Latinoamericano de Conflictos Ambientales (Chile). Site in Espanol and English.

Business Partners for Development (BPD) - Natural Resources Cluster
Extract from website: "The Natural Resources Cluster seeks to enhance the role of oil, gas and mining corporations in development. Our aim is to produce practical examples, based on 'focus projects' around the world, of how three-way partnerships involving companies, government authorities and civil society organization can be a more effective means of reducing social risks and promoting community development."

Member partners include; AngloAmerican, BP plc., Shell International, CARE International, Placer Dome Ltd, WMC Ltd, UK Department for International Development (DFID) and The World Bank.

Focus projects in Latin America are: Las Cristinas gold mine - Venezuela; and BPXC, petroleum - Colombia, as well as a range of other focus projects in Africa and Indonesia.

Centro de Investigación y Planificación del Medio Ambiente (CIPMA) / Center for Environmental Investigation and Planning
Chile. The CIPMA is an academic non-profit organisation, that conducts interdisciplinary research on the inter-relations produced between development and environment, and focused on the improvement of environmental policy, and environmental management in diverse social sectors, with emphasis on citizen participation.

CIPMA with the MPRI are the South American regional partners for the global project MMSD. Further information can be found on the MMSD South America website. (Spanish, with some English)

Recent projects related to the minerals sector include:"Mining and Natural Resource Exploitation Companies' Community Development Activities in Latin America and the Caribbean", funded by the IDRC.


Centro de Tecnología Mineral (CETEM) / Center for Mineral Technology
Brazil research centre linked to the Ministry of Science and Technology. CETEM addresses the development, adaptation and dissemination
of mineral, metallurgical, materials and environmental technologies.

The centre's mission is to promote technological development creating solutions compatible to the sustainable use of non-renewable resources and to the preservation of the environment, contributing to the social welfare and to the economical progress of Brazil. (Portuguese, Spanish and English)

The Internet Forum on Export Markets and the Environment
Focus: Mining in Latin America

A research project focusing on the measurement of the environmental impacts of copper mining in Chile, Bolivia and Peru. The information is to be used to set priorities for data gathering, environmental monitoring, and reforms in legal, regulatory, enforcement and public policy.

This is a collaborative study funded by a grant from the IDRC in Canada and led by CIPMA. In Bolivia and Peru, the MEDMIN (currently Integrated Program for Environmental Impacts of the small and medium sized mining sector), and the PALMA (Proyecto Peruano-Alemán Minería y Medio Ambiente) respectively carry out the research at their country level and receive training on the methodological approach.

Mining Policy Research Initiative (MPRI) / Iniciativa de Investigación sobre Políticas Mineras (IIPM)
The Mining Policy Research Initiative (MPRI/IIPM) was created in 1998 by the Canadian International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and is located in the Latin American Regional Office (LACRO) of IDRC, in Montevideo, Uruguay.

Its general objective is to support applied and participatory research on issues related to mining and sustainable development in mining regions and communities in Latin America and the Caribbean, fostering collaboration among different stakeholders related with the subject and improving the access and use of relevant information on the subject in the Region.

MPRI, with the CIPMA, are the South American regional partners for the global project MMSD. For further information see the MMSD South America website. (English, French and Spanish)
