Development Indicators in the Mineral Industries (SDIMI 2003) Growing environmental and social concerns, supply chain procurement standards as well as public pressure and regulatory measures will profoundly shape the global mining business in the near future. In order to cope with these challenges the mining and minerals companies are forced to integrate sustainable development as well as stakeholders participation into their business strategies and policies. Up to now there are on-going discussions and projects on the development of sustainability indicators however these different efforts havent resulted into a common agreement yet. The objective of this Conference is to assist the mining and minerals industries in their global transition to sustainable development through the development, monitoring and assessment of sustainable development criteria for mineral operations. A goal of the Conference is also to conclude with a consensus plan and a process, representing a variety of stakeholders, which can provide audience to the minerals community on the path to sustainable development. Strategies to Address Child Labour in Supply Chains Event details:
The issue of child labour is an integral part of the UN Global Compact, the human rights debate and ethical supply chain management. The Corporate Citizenship Unit has been conducting significant research within these areas. This research seminar will focus on the child labour problem in Southern Supply Chains. It will particularly look at why child labour occurs in supply chains and what actions companies need to take to determine socially responsible strategies to address child labour. The seminar will be presented by Bahar Ali Kazmi, of the Corporate Citizenship Unit of Warwick Business School. Bahar has extensive experience in developing, implementing and monitoring child labour projects. 2002 Sustainable Development Conference / 27th Annual Environmental Workshop
2002 will see a milestone in the minerals industry’s efforts to determine its role in sustainable development and plan actions that will build on the industry’s contribution to sustainability. Following the Global Mining Initiative Conference in May and the World Summit on Sustainable Development in September, this inaugural Minerals Council of Australia Sustainable Development Conference will focus on how Australian minerals operations can contribute to sustainable development in a practical way. The Conference will incorporate the 27th Annual Environmental Workshop which is highly regarded by environmental practitioners in government, business and the community. Meeting on the Evolution of Employment, Working Time and Training in the
Mining Industry The purpose of the tripartite meeting is to: exchange views on the evolution
of employment, working time and training in the mining industry, the social
and labour implications of these developments for the parties concerned,
and the role of social dialogue in addressing them, using a report prepared
by the Office as the basis for its discussions; adopt conclusions that
include proposals for action by governments, employers' and workers' organizations
at the national level and the ILO; and adopt a report on its discussion. Attendees will consist of delegates from all interested governments, 18 Employer representatives and 18 Worker representatives appointed by the Governing Body of the ILO after consultations with the respective groups. Warwick Corporate Citizenship Conference: Sustainable Development &
the Role of Business in Poverty Elimination The focus of the 2002 Corporate Citizenship Unit (CCU) Research Conference will be Sustainable Development and the Role of Business in Poverty Elimination. The conference will look at research and case studies of the implementation of business strategies of corporate citizenship worldwide, including social performance management systems and tools, multi-stakeholder partnerships, business approaches to human rights promotion and the Global Compact. Following a keynote address, the major part of the conference will be a set of workshops with priority given to discussion time. In the afternoon, a panel for the Warwick Debate will examine: "Has Business a Role to Play in Poverty Elimination?" Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) The World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) will bring together tens of thousands of participants, including heads of State and Government, national delegates and leaders from non-governmental organizations (NGOs), businesses and other major groups to focus the world's attention and direct action toward meeting the challenges presented in moving the world towards a sustianable development path. The WSSD will mark the tenth anniversary of the Earth Summit held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1992 and provide the opportunity to reassess the implementation mechanisms for Agenda 21. The mineral sector is mentioned at several points within the Draft Plan of Implementation for the World Summit on Sustainable Development, a key document and focus for Summit outcomes. This draft plan has been prepared through a series of preparatory meetings and is expected to be finalised and agreed upon during the Summit. Development - Policy and Practice A call for applications to the 2002 ACUNS/ASIL Summer Workshop on International Organization Studies has been announced. The Academic Council on the United Nations System (ACUNS) and the American Society of International Law (ASIL) are sponsoring the twelfth in a series of summer workshops to be held this year at the University of Namibia (UNAM), Windhoek, Namibia, from 11 August to 23 August 2002. The workshop will be focusing on policy and practical strategies for sustainable resource devlopment, and is designed specifically for international relations and law school faculty, advanced graduate students, post-doctoral scholars, lawyers and practitioners from policy circles and civil society. Justice – Implementing International Sustainable Development Law Sustainable Justice 2002, organized by the Centre for International Sustainable Development Law, and co-sponsored by the United Nations Environment Programme, will assemble over 200 judges, lawyers, professors and other experts from governments and inter-governmental organisations, civil society associations, academic institutions, foundations and the private sector. The conference panels and workshops will focus on a range of key issues, such as: New legal mechanisms and instruments for implementing international law in the field of sustainable development; Innovative measures for financing development that is both environmentally and socially sustainable; Promoting an attitude of compliance with international agreements; Transparency, participation and access to justice; Sustainable trade, investment and competition law; Human rights and poverty eradication; International sustainable development law as it relates to natural resources, biodiversity, climate change and vulnerability, and health. and companies across the Americas can cooperate to ensure standards for

Conference The Global Mining Initiative (GMI) Conference is intended to be a worldwide policy dialogue and forum to assist the industry define its response to the challenges of sustainable development leading into the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) later in 2002. Representatives from industry, industry associations, government and NGO stakeholders are expected to attend. The major input to the conference will come from the Mining, Minerals and Sustainable Development (MMSD) project due to conclude in April 2002 with the release of a final report. National Conference on Mining Event details:
Approximately 130 participants attended the conference, representing about 70 local community peoples organizations, and regional, national and international support groups. Experiences were shared through 11 Case Study Presentations, open forums, panel and workshop discussions. At the conferences conclusion participants presented a Resolution to Scrap the Philippine Mining Act of 1995 and a Conference Declaration. The Clean Water Act was a milestone in protection of the nation’s waters.
