Event Details:

Industry experts, metal users, regulators and others will gather in Canberra, Australia, to exchange information on current materials stewardship thinking and practical applications. The principal objective of this meeting is to lay the foundations for a global policy framework for materials stewardship.
The event, which is being hosted by the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA), will consist of a one-day open seminar followed by a two-day workshop. The seminar will bring together approximately 100 stakeholders involved in key elements of the metals and minerals’ value chain, including industry, government regulators, policy developers, environmental groups and non-government organisations.

Priority issues for the Seventh Meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 7) include the biological diversity of mountain ecosystems, the role of protected areas in the preservation of biological diversity, the transfer of technology and technology cooperation, as well as implementation of the target set at its sixth meeting to achieve, by 2010, a significant reduction in the rate of loss of biodiversity. The COP is also expected to follow up on the call for action issued at the World Summit on Sustainable Development to negotiate an international regime on access and benefit sharing within the framework of the Convention.

The Conference of the Parties (COP) is the highest decision-making body of the Convention.

Event details:

Growing environmental and social concerns, supply chain procurement standards as well as public pressure and regulatory measures will profoundly shape the global mining business in the near future. In order to cope with these challenges the mining and minerals companies are forced to integrate sustainable development as well as stakeholders’ participation into their business strategies and policies. Up to now there are on-going discussions and projects on the development of sustainability indicators however these different efforts haven’t resulted into a common agreement yet.

The objective of this Conference is to assist the mining and minerals industries in their global transition to sustainable development through the development, monitoring and assessment of sustainable development criteria for mineral operations. A goal of the Conference is also to conclude with a consensus plan and a process, representing a variety of stakeholders, which can provide audience to the minerals community on the path to sustainable development.

On 1 January a certification scheme creating a paper-trail from mine to
store for rough diamonds was launched, with over 50 countries signed up to
it. The result of the Kimberley process, this scheme was the result of
several years of international negotiations involving governments, companies
and NGO's and aimed at denying revenue to rebels, especially in Africa.

The issue of child labour is an integral part of the UN Global Compact, the human rights debate and ethical supply chain management. The Corporate Citizenship Unit has been conducting significant research within these areas.

This research seminar will focus on the child labour problem in Southern Supply Chains. It will particularly look at why child labour occurs in supply chains and what actions companies need to take to determine socially responsible strategies to address child labour.

The seminar will be presented by Bahar Ali Kazmi, of the Corporate Citizenship Unit of Warwick Business School. Bahar has extensive experience in developing, implementing and monitoring child labour projects.

The MMSD Information Session will be co-hosted by the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) to provide Summit delegates with the opportunity to learn about MMSD and allow Project members to respond to questions about the MMSD process and the work undertaken.

The event is planned to be as interactive as possible with five different perspectives briefly presented in a panel and then opening the discussion to the floor. The event will showcase the global report Breaking New Ground, the regional reports and other materials emerging from the MMSD process.

The World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) will bring together tens of thousands of participants, including heads of State and Government, national delegates and leaders from non-governmental organizations (NGOs), businesses and other major groups to focus the world's attention and direct action toward meeting the challenges presented in moving the world towards a sustianable development path. The WSSD will mark the tenth anniversary of the Earth Summit held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1992 and provide the opportunity to reassess the implementation mechanisms for Agenda 21.

The mineral sector is mentioned at several points within the Draft Plan of Implementation for the World Summit on Sustainable Development, a key document and focus for Summit outcomes. This draft plan has been prepared through a series of preparatory meetings and is expected to be finalised and agreed upon during the Summit. Sections of the draft plan relevant to the sector are outlined here.

A Mining, Minerals and Sustainable Development (MMSD) Project Discussion side event is to be held during the Summit.
