ANMED is an information database on the mining and energy resource
sectors for the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation APEC
forum member countries. Information available includes: resources,
industries, finance and investment, legal and regulatory, land
and environment, and geoscientific data. The project is led by
the Australian Geological Survey Organisation (AGSO).
Contains mining and environmental legal and regulatory information
on most of the APEC member countries.

The ILO bibliographic database features references to over 55,000
national laws on labour, social security, and related human rights,

Court of Arbitration (PCA) - Environmental
Dispute Resolution
An independent intergovernmental organization, separate to the
UN system, that currently has 92 member states. The PCA offers
a broad range of services for resolving disputes between States,
disputes between states and private parties, and disputes in
which intergovernmental organizations are involved. These services
include arbitration, conciliation, fact finding commissions
of inquiry, good offices and mediation. (Website in English

Recently the PAC has adopted the "Rules
of Procedure for Arbitration of Disputes Relating to Natural
Resources and / or the Environment" (PDF), and the "Draft
Optional Rules for Conciliation of Disputes Relating to Natural
Resources and/or the Environment" (PDF). These rules
now allow States, intergovernmental organizations, non-governmental
organizations, multinational corporations and private parties
to seek recourse with an international mechanism for the resolution
of controversies concerning environmental protection or conservation
of natural resources. This rules are viewed as relevant to
major environmental accidents involving the mineral sector,
such as the Baia
Mare tailings spill in Romania.

a semigovernmental organization under the jurisdiction of the
Ministry of International Trade and Industry and the main organization
that executes the Japanese Government's policies related to the

- ISO
Strategic Advisory Group on Corporate Social Responsibility
- The Strategic Advisory Group has been established by the International
Organization for Standardization (ISO) to discuss and to advise
the ISO Council on: whether ISO should develop standards or other
documents on the subject of CSR; what the scope of such work should
be; and the kind of deliverables ISO should develop. Such a CSR
standard would expand upon the successful ISO 14000 Environment
Management Systems and ISO 9000 Quality Management Systems standards
adopted by many companies worldwide. The site, hosted by the International
Institute of Sustainable Development (IISD), features reports
and selected working documents from the ISO Strategic Advisory
Group.

Witness
Global Witness focuses upon human right and environmental abuses
involved with the extraction of natural resources in the developing
world. They were instrumental in bringing conflict diamonds to
world attention and are also campaigning for energy and mining
corporations to disclose tax and other payments to governments
to improve transparency and reduce corruption. They received a
Nobel Peace prize nomination in March 2002 for their work on conflict
diamonds.

SERL is the leading international forum for energy and resources
lawyers with a membership of over 1,700 including professionals
from private practice, energy companies, academia and governments
around the world.
SERL comprises seven specialist committees and a number of ad
hoc regional groups which focus on global issues in the areas
of oil, minerals, coal, electricity, nuclear, water and gas law.
An on-line reading
room is available that has a comprehensive range of publications
(papers, books and journals) in Adobe PDF format.

The Australasian Legal Information Institute provides access to
databases of legislation for a large number of countries worldwide

Africa. The databases include mining and natural resource law.

Economics and Management Society (MEMS)
MEMS is a not-for-profit professional forum for academic, industrial,
private and government specialists with the purpose of furtherng
the application of economics, management, finance, and policy
analysis to the issues of the minerals and materials industries,
including resource, energy, and environmental issues. MEMS holds
at least one professional meeting per year.

The centre offers a wide range of courses on law and policy

petroleum and mining law, economics, energy law reform, international
water law and national water regulation, post-privatisation electricity
and pipeline regulation and contract negotiations.

The CISDL based in Montreal, Canada, promotes sustainable societies
and the protection of ecosystems through the advancement of international
sustainable development law. They have a programme focusing on
International Natural Resources Law.

des Mines de Paris - Centre
d'Economie Industrielle (CERNA)
CERNA is the Centre for Industrial Economics at the Paris School
of Mines. Industrial Economics deal with the dynamics of markets
and firms, and with the public intervention on those dynamics.
Cerna's research is empirical and focused on economic changes.
It is initiated by case studies, on site investigation in firms
and administrations.
Recent work has focused on voluntary industry approaches to improving
environmental performance such as codes of conduct. They have
recently been participants in an EC sponsored European
Research Network for Voluntary Approaches to Environmental Performance
(CAVA: Concerted Action on Voluntary Approaches). Literature surveys
produced by this group in addition to workshop proceedings are
available for download, as well as extensive reference lists on

- Eden Project - Global Centre for Post-Mining Regeneration
An partnership of the Eden Project, Rio Tinto, English
Nature and Anglo American is investigating the need for a
Global Centre for Post-Mining Regeneration through a year long
feasibility study to finish in March 2004.
The intention is to bring industry stakeholders together to
address the major socio-economic, environmental and technical
issues
of
mine closure planning.
