Title of event: Sullivan Mine Roundtable - Lessons in Sustainability

Event Details:

The City of Kimberley is home to the Sullivan Mine, which will be closing later this year after nearly 100 years of mining activity. Cominco Ltd., The World Bank and the City of Kimberley will host an international gathering of experts and representatives of communities of interest to examine the social, environmental and economic aspects of the Sullivan and other mine projects. While the Sullivan Mine will serve as a focal point, other case studies, including the Antamina Mine and Placer Dome's Porgera and Misima mines will be discussed.

A round table format will be adopted to encourage a lively and open dialogue and the sharing of experiences and perspectives of all participants.

The Fourth Environmental Cooperation Workshop together with the Sixth Plenary Meeting of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum, Group of Experts on Minerals and Energy Exploration and Development (GEMEED) was hosted by the Mining Promotion Division of the Ministry of the Economy of Mexico.

Issues discussed included: the terms of reference of GEMEED in the context of the new Future Directions Strategic Plan of the Energy Working Group; the approach to the “Rio+10 Agenda”, that is placing interesting challenges to all stakeholders in the mining activity; the projects of GEMEED: ANMED entering into another development stage, and the new project on the demand side of the mining business; how mining contributes to sustainable development and the opportunities for cooperation at the ECOW workshop; the relationship between GEMEED and other international and regional fora.
