About Small-Scale Mining

What is small-scale mining?
This is a question which has been debated at some length but which does not have a single answer satisfactory to all interested parties. A variety of countries and organizations have defined small-scale mining to suit their specific requirements. This is fine until people with different definitions and understandings begin to discuss the sector - It leads to confusion and this does nothing to solve the sector's problems.

The MRF will try not to be judgmental over definitions but will, as one of its aims, try to encourage discussions leading to better understanding.

What are the aims of the Small-Scale Mining section?
We aim to increase awareness of the small-scale mining sector and encourage its acceptance as a legitimate source of livelihood. We will also try to draw attention to information and events which would be useful to small-scale miners and to the policy makers who can make an impact on the small-scale mining sector.
