and health, training and industrial relations. Work is also conducted
on the issue of child labour across a variety of sectors including
mining.

UNIDO has been conducting a global programme on the Abatement
of Mercury in Artisinal Mining funded by the GEF and participating
countries. Project briefs and reports on earlier research in Ghana
and the Philippines is available. This information is made available
under a Global
Mercury Assessment programme coordinated by UNEP Chemicals Unit.
UNEP is developing a global assessment of mercury and its compounds,
including an outline of options for addressing any significant global
adverse impacts of mercury, to be presented to the UNEP Governing
Council at its twenty-second session in 2003.
United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA)
The UN ECA, along with the UN DESA, organised a seminar on "Artisanal
and Small-scale Mining in Africa: Identifying Best Practices and
Building the Sustainable Livelihoods of Communities"
that was held in Yaoundé, Cameroon, from 19-22 November 2002.

The Intermediate
Technology Development Group (ITDG) is an international non-governmental
organization which specializes in helping people to use technology
for 'Practical Answers to Poverty'. Based in the United Kingdom,
the group works in the regions of Latin America, East Africa, Southern
Africa and South Asia focusing on small-scale mining, in addition
to agriculture, transport, shelter, disaster mitigation and energy
technologies.

The Mandala
Projects is a collection of cross-disciplinary efforts to examine
the effects of globalization on people. The Trade
and Environment Database (TED) and Inventory
of Conflict and Environment (ICE) are two projects under this
banner. Each consists of a series of case studies, research papers
and other information on the areas of trade, conflict, environment,

at poverty alleviation in northern part of the Province of Central
Kalimantan, Indonesia. The proposed project seeks to develop and
integrate artisanal mining into an existing but expanded community
development programme in a remote area of Indonesia. A brochure
(Adobe PDF) is also available on Yayasan Tambuhak Sinta (YTS),
established by PT Kalimantan Surya Kencana (KSK) in 1998, to encourage
and faciliate community development programmes.
