Title of event: Seminar on "Artisanal and Small-scale Mining in Africa: Identifying Best Practices and Building the Sustainable Livelihoods of Communities"

A seminar on Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining in Africa will be held to identify best practices and assist in the building of sustainable livelihoods for communities in Africa.

The seminar, to be held in Yaoundé, Cameroon from 19-22 November 2002, is being jointly organized by the Water, Natural Resources & SIDS Branch, DSD/UNDESA and the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and will be hosted by the Central Africa Sub-regional Development Centre.

Participants will be brought together from several African countries where small-scale and artisanal mining (ASM) presents a serious development issue. These key stakeholders from a broad development spectrum will encourage a fresh exchange of views and experiences around some of the key development policy challenges of ASM, allowing its economic dynamism to better harnesses, and identifying sustainable alternative economic opportunities for poverty reduction and sustainable development.

The workshop for the Southern Africa regional group of the Mining, Minerals and Sustainable Development (MMSD) project provided a progress update, reviewed research reports and recommendations, and identified implementation mechanisms. A major topic of this workshop was small-scale mining. This information will feed into the MMSD final report.

The Inaugural Meeting of the Collaborative Group on Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (CASM) was held on 27-28 March 2001. The mission of CASM is "to reduce poverty by supporting integrated sustainable development of communities affected by or involved in artisanal and small-scale mining in developing countries.".

The group have now changed their name to Communities and Small-Scale Mining (CASM).
