British Geological Survey
Survey and research establishment with a wide range of project experience including small-scale mining.

Business Partners for Development (BPD) - Natural Resources Cluster
The focus project on Las Cristinas gold mine - Venezuela has worked on establishing a partnership with small-scale miners in the area of the operation.

Centre for Mineral Technology (CETEM)
Involved in the MMSD project as a partner for a country study on small scale mining in Brazil, South America.

Communities and Small-Scale Mining (CASM)
CASM is an umbrella forum, providing a coordinated and integrated approach to assessing and addressing some of the problems within the small-scale mining sub-sector and disseminating pertinent information on activities. Contributors to the forum include the World Bank, ICME, United Kingdom Department for International Development (DFID), Conservation International, ILO, UN Agencies and the Institute of Geo-Sciences & Environment - Japan. An Expert Advisory Group of independent experts and representatives of small-scale mining oversees the quality and relevance of the groups activities.

Involved in the MMSD project as a partner for a country study on small scale mining in Ecuador, South America.

Fundación Medio Ambiente, Minería e Industria (MEDMIN)
Involved in the MMSD project as a partner for a country study on small scale mining in Bolivia, South America.

Grupo de Análisis para el Desarrollo (GRADE)
Involved in the MMSD project as a partner for a country study on small scale mining in Peru, South America.

Hg-Net - The Mercury Network
Network dedicated to sharing information on mercury in gold mining throughout the world. Formed as a result of the International Symposium at Santarem, Brazil in 1997.

Institute for Geo-Resources and Environment
The Institute for Geo-Resources and Environment is a Japanese research institute that conducts fieldwork and research on the planning and evaluation of exploration and the development and utilization of underground resources such as geothermal, fuel, and mineral resources. A recent project in the mineral resources area is the 'Interdisciplinary Study on the Environmental Management, Planning and Risk Communication in Gold Rush Regions'. Intermediate Technology Development Group (ITDG)
Development NGO committed to providing access to appropriate technologies to promote sustainable livelihoods in the developing world. Small-scale mining is one of many programmes. The ITDG have recently undertaken a regional study on small-scale mines (MS Word 3.6Mb) commissioned by MMSD Southern Africa and conducted in partnership with the Southern African Network for Training and Research on the Environment (SANTREN).

Intermediate Technology Consultants Ltd
The consulting arm of ITDG working in three main activity areas; Energy and Environment, Enterprise Development and Sustainable Livelihoods. Currently involved in a project with Projekt-Consult in Madagascar on Small-Scale Mining Regulation (site in Francais and English).

Danish geological consultancy providing training and services to the small-scale mining sector.

MMSD Small-Scale Mining
The Mining, Minerals and Sustainable Development (MMSD) project small-scale mining activities and partners.

National Institute of Small Mines (NISM)
Involved in the MMSD project as a partner for a country study on small scale mining in India.

Projekt-Consult
Consultancy specializing in small-scale mining technologies and environmental effects of mining. They are advising the Small Scale Mining Department of the Minerals Commission on a project promoting small-scale gold and diamond mining in Ghana. The aim of the project is to increase the contribution of the small scale mining sector to the Ghanaian economy by enabling the small scale miners to improve their operations making them more economically productive, safe and environmentally sound. They are also involved in a project, ATPEM, on Small Scale Mining Regulation in Madagascar.

Promotion de l'Artisanat Minier et Protection de l'Environnement (PAMPE)
Involved in the MMSD project as a partner for a country study on small scale mining in Mali, West Africa.

South African Department of Minerals and Energy
Small-scale mining activities page. A National Small Scale Mining Development Framework is being developed to establish enabling conditions for small scale mining development with the objective of alleviating technical and financial constraints faced by active or aspirant small scale miners.  

Southern African Network for Training and Research on the Environment (SANTREN)
The SANTREN Small Scale Mining Group has the brief to review the impacts of small scale mining in certain SADC countries and, using this information, to develop short courses aimed at specific target groups involved in the small scale mining industry.
