UNEP.Net Freshwater Portal
An online gateway to information about freshwater managed by UNEP. The portal, is an extensive catalogue of information resources ranging from documents, to databases, to maps and graphics, covering the most critical freshwater issues of the day: water scarcity, irrigated agriculture, water and sanitation, water quality, groundwater, transboundary water management, water and ecosystems, floods and droughts, and urban water.

Dams and Development Project (DDP) - United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and World Commission for Dams (WCD) - The DDP promotes and supports inclusive and informed multi-stakeholder dialogue on the issues raised in the World Commission on Dams report at the local, national and global levels to achieve sustainable development in the water and energy sectors.

The RAMSAR Convention on Wetlands - An intergovernmental treaty adopted in 1971. Ramsar is the first of the modern global intergovernmental treaties on conservation and wise use of natural resources. Its scope scope covers all aspects of wetland conservation and wise use, recognizing wetlands as ecosystems that are extremely important for biodiversity conservation in general and for the well-being of human communities. As of 1 June 2001 the convention had 124 Contracting Parties and more than 1070 wetlands have been designated for inclusion in the List of Wetlands of International Importance, covering some 81 million hectares.

International Conference on Freshwater - Bonn, Germany 3-7 December 2001. - Conference objectives were to build on freshwater-related objectives identified in Chapter 18 of Agenda 21. The need for action was further emphasised in the United Nations Millennium Declaration adopted in September 2000, where special attention was focused on both, improving the availability of safe drinking water, as well as, reducing the unsustainable use of water resources by developing regional, national and local level water management strategies that promote equitable access and adequate supplies. Information available includes presentations, ministerial declaration and multi-stakeholder dialogue outcomes.

Multistakeholder

Development Gateway - Water Resources Management

Sustainable Development International - Organisation responding to Agenda 21 by transforming existing information into forms more useful for decision making through the showcasing of case studies, technical and strategic articles that provide solutions to problems in the field and details of who to work with in solving these problems. Focus on water resources and oceans/marine, as well as other sectors and issues such as energy, agriculture, forests, climate change and transport. A journal and news letter are available by electronic subscription/download.

World Commission on Dams (WCD) - The WCD consists of 12 Commissioners nominated by the major interest groups (engineers, planners, dam owners, government decision-makers, environmental scientists, affected peoples and indigenous peoples, academics and researchers). The Commission has been established to resolve conflicts over how to develop water and energy resources by: reviewing the development effectiveness of large dams and assessing alternatives; developing a framework for assessing options and decision-making processes for water resources, energy services and development; and developing internationally-acceptable criteria and guidelines for planning, designing, construction, operation, monitoring, and decommissioning of dams.
